In this episode we talk about what to do when a teammate is dropping in motivation.
You know, learning about negotiations and learning about sales helps in so many different areas of your life. I recently had a little bit of a scare because one of my teammates she wanted I wouldn't say she wanted to quit, But I can sense that she was dropping and motivation, and I wasn't sure what to do.
My thought process is, if she's not happy, then there's no reason for me to fight to keep her because she won't be happy and she won't do a good job in the business. So I I am essentially trying to figure out what my next move should be. Should I replace her or what do I do?
And I reached out in this mastermind from Nathan Hirsch and Connor. Um, his last name is escaping me at the moment. I'm so sorry, Conor, but I remember your face and your name. But in the mastermind, they gave me some advice and they said, you know, why don't you see what's going on and see if there's a way you can reengage him or her and get them re motivated.
So I held a meeting with my teammate, and I wanted to know what was going on, and it really sounded like I was losing her like she was ready to quit, and I wasn't sure, you know. So I asked your what she wanted to do. Like is she in her and she out? And it seemed like she wanted to be in, but I still could engage her motivation. So we got on a call on a zoom call and on the zoom call, asked her, How motivated are you? On a scale of one through 10? And she told me she was out of six and this was really scary to hear because six is so low. I was hoping when she was talking. When I asked the question, I was hoping she would say like eight, because getting from an eight to attend isn't that difficult for the six. That's like, you know, it could take just one little thing for to go to a four easily right? So six that was so low and to me that I'm thinking while I'm losing her.
So that's my thought process. And then I remembered negotiations, and I remembered sales, right. So for negotiations and in sales, really, it's It's not just about making yourself happy. It's really about increasing the size of the pie, making the entire pie happy, I suppose. Um, but it's making both, both parties happy.
And what I remembered about sales is any time you're selling something, you have to be able to crystallize a vision, a dream. So that's the approach I took and I asked, My teammate, Is there any kind of universe where your motivation is a 10? So this I think I got her to start thinking about what she likes, what she doesn't like, how she would see herself continue in the role. And it was a good visualization exercise because it's essentially forcing her to look into the future. It's forcing both of us to look into the future, really. But look into the future and see what would work for both of us. So she wrote down what her universe looks like, and I also shared what my universe looks like. And then we also listed all of her duties. Um, and then we we notated what she didn't like and what she did like.
So then based off of that we had, we went line by line on what her universe looks like. And we made a plan for how to get there or made a plan to get there immediately. Either way, we had a solid plan where I feel like we were able to crystallized that vision that she has with the future and give her a plan for her to get there. And at the same time, you know, it helps me to see where she fits within my universe. And maybe, you know, I was a part of me was thinking, okay, maybe there isn't a universe, and I was ready for that decision. It would have been a hard decision because, you know, it sucks having to train someone and bring someone onto your team. Especially when for this person in particular, like she's a star teammate and she knows what I'm talking about. She listens to all these podcasts every day. She's going to be the first one to listen to it because she's actually publishing these episodes for me.
Anyhoo, the point is, yeah, I think this exercise helped where we both described our futures and try to see how our universe is could fit together. So we went line by line on what her future looked like. How did how to actually create a road map so she can get there? And by the end of the call, she said that her motivation was 10 and I'm hoping that it stays at 10. We'll see how it goes. But at least now I feel more secure that I have my teammate back and she is getting her motivation back and she's in it for the long haul lets you know, fingers crossed. Let's hoping right? And even if things you know, people change and that's okay. Interest change, people change, opportunities come and go.
And it's really important to find out what's going to be best for both of you, because there's no sense. There's no sense in me keeping a teammate, for example, that's unhappy because unhappy people aren't They're gonna make me unhappy and they're not gonna do happy work. And it's it's What I've learned in the past is when I've had teammates go. I always get a better teammate. So the teammates that I have right now is that better teammate, and if it stops working for her, I mean, you know it stops working for her, and that's okay, right? But it will open up some room for a better fit. So you just kind of roll with the punches.
But I am happy that this exercise worked and we were able to find a future. I find a universe where this does work, and I think overall happy for the outdoor school with Nathan, her son, Connor, for having that resource around. And I'm happy that I was able to talk to my teammate and actually come to an agreement and come to a solid plan where it's not vague, and it looks very clear on what we expect from each other and how to move forward. So I thought it was very productive. We actually spent the whole day talking about this. We didn't get any other work done, which puts us a little behind on the other work. But at the same time, I feel like the progress that we made today is going to be able to elevate us so much higher for the future. So just thought I'd share um, part of my team building experience. Scaling is a mountain. I'm still climbing, so I'll share my stories as I as I go. But where I am an expert is going to market. And you already know if you need hope with that, feel free to reach out.
